Trachynotothrips brevispinis View in CoL sp. n.
( Figs. 1–7 View FIGURES 1 – 4 View FIGURES 5 – 7 )
Description. Male. Macropterous. Distended body length about 1.0 mm. Body generally pale with brown markings. Head shaded with ocellar triangle, middle behind ocellar triangle and frons pale; antennal segments I, II and VI to VIII shaded, segments III to V yellowish white with distal half pale brown. Pronotum uniformly yellowish white. Mesonotum yellowish white, slightly shaded at each side. Metanotum pale brown with middle slightly pale. Metapreepisternum, metaepisternum, metaepimeron pale brown. Fore wings with alternate three white areas and three brown bands, apex pale, basal brown band paler than other bands; scale slightly shaded. Fore femora pale, mid femora pale brown with apex pale, hind femora pale; fore and mid tibiae pale with middle pale brown, hind tibia pale; all tarsi pale. Abdominal segment I yellowish white, segments II to IX slightly shaded with middle of terga slightly pale. Prominent body setae shaded.
Head 0.5 times as long as wide; dorsal surface with anastomosing lines of sculpture having small wrinkles between sculpture lines in front of fore ocellus, with few weak lines sculpture and weak wrinkles postocular area ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Ocellar setae III situated between hind ocelli, 6.5 times as long as distance between their bases. Postocular setae minute. Compound eyes with stout lanceolate setae. Antennal segments III to VI with some microtrichial rows on both dorsal and ventral surfaces; segment II without microtrichial row; segment IV widest at middle, tapering at distal half; segment VI the longest, tapering at distal twothirds like neck, with inner sensecone exceeding middle of segment VIII and a ventral apical sensecone exceeding apex of segment VIII ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Length/Width of antennal segments I to VIII as follows: 0.9, 1.3, 2.8, 3.0, 2.0, 3.2, 1.5, 3.3.
Pronotum 0.5 times as long as wide, with 20 discal setae; posteroangular setae I (=outer setae) 0.6 times as long as pronotal median length and 1.2 times setae II (=inner setae) ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Mesonotum sculptured with transverse striae on posterior half; campaniform sensilla absent anteromedially; median pair of setae situated near posterior margin. Metascutum sculptured with narrow spaced striae, transversely posteromedially; median pair of setae 0.2 times as long as metascutal median length ( Fig.3 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Fore wing first vein with 5 basal setae; costal vein with 26 (left) and 24 (right) setae; second vein with 8 setae.
Abdominal terga II to VII sculptured with outside of B2 setae, smooth between each B2 setae ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 7 ); tergum II with four lateral maginal setae arranged in a line; terga III and IV with six pairs of setae, two pairs of spinelike very stout and short setae present at each side ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ); terga V to VIII with five pairs of normal setae; terga V to VIII with B4 setae minute ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 7 ); tergum IX with microtrichia on posterior margin between drepanae ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 7 ); sterna VIII with three pairs of posteromarginal setae and no discal setae ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 5 – 7 ).
Measurements (in m). Holotype (male). Distended body length 995. Head length 65, width across cheeks 125; compound eye dorsal length 60, width 43; ocellar setae III length 33, distance between their bases 5. Pronotal median length 75, width 163; posteromarginal setae I length 44, setae II length 36; metascutal median length 60, median setae length 13; fore wing length 280. Antennal segments I to VIII length (width) as follows: 20(23), 30(23), 43(15), 45(15), 30(15), 40(13), 8(5), 13(4).
Type series. Holotype male. THAILAND, Phuket Is., Phuket Hill, host unknown, 9 ix1992, S. Okajima. The type is deposited in Laboratory of Insect Resources, Faculty of Agriculture, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Atsugi, Kanagawa Pref., Japan.
Etymology. In reference to the spinelike setae on abdominal terga III–IV of the species.
Remarks. In this species, there are some differences from the type species, in addition to above identification key as follows; the lines of sculpture more narrowlyspaced than in the type species, especially on metaepisternum, metaepimeron, metapreepisternum, and abdominal terga and laterotergites, head with many small wrinkles within the reticulation or between the sculpture lines, whereas there are no wrinkles in the type species.
