Genus Meccus Stål View in CoL

Meccus Stål 1859 , p. 102. Type species: Conorhinus phyllosomus Burmeister 1835 .

Comments. Stål (1859) recognized this genus to include a group of Mexican species, but later it was considered a synonym of Triatoma by Usinger (1944). Triatoma phyllosoma (Burmeister) and some other related species were treated as the Triatoma phyllosoma group by Usinger (1944) and later as the phyllosoma complex by Lent & Wygodzinsky (1973). Then Carcavallo et al. (2000), revalidated Meccus based on a morphological phylogenetic analysis and supported by molecular evidence by Hypša et al. (2002). The recognition of Meccus as a valid genus, however, was not generalized in the literature before the work by Galvão et al. (2003). It includes 6 Mexican endemic species.
