Gilpinia frutetorum (Fabricius, 1793)

( Figs 5M, N View FIGURES 5 , 8C, D View FIGURES 8 , 9B, C View FIGURES 9 )

Ovipositor. Lance dorsally without median furrow, with short apical cleft (often difficult to see), in lateral view with dorsal margin nearly straight ( Figs 8C, D View FIGURES 8 ); posterior projection on processus articularis apically not extending to most basal annular suture of lance, mostly fused with main body of lance, in dorsal view narrow, and in lateral view ventrally slightly expanded beyond main body of lance. Lancet ventrally slightly convex at second annulus ( Figs 9B, C View FIGURES 9 ); sclerotized band of radix angularly bent and wider than olistheter at twisted part (arrowed part); lamnium with 10–11annuli and length from ventral end of first ctenidium to apex 2.5–2.8 × maximum width; sclerite before first annulus narrow; ctenidia slightly arched; first annulus without serrula, with ctenidium widely separated from ventral margin of lancet; serrula of second annulus somewhat larger than other serrulae, with precalcar distinct.

Material examined. 1♀ ( Figs 5M, N View FIGURES 5 ), Sweden , “SW. Skizzi ????[illegible] 11/7 1950 Karl-Johan Hedqvist leg.” ; 1♀ ( Fig. 9B View FIGURES 9 ), Germany , Gross Schönebeck NE 8km, J. Golldack ; 2♀ ( Figs 8C, D View FIGURES 8 ), Germany, Darmstadt, Krampe; 1♀, Germany , Landsberg, R. Meyer ; 1♀ ( Fig. 9C View FIGURES 9 ), “ POLAND: 1959. H. Pschorn-Walcher. B.M.1960- 386.” ; 1♀, Austria, Vienna.

Remarks. The ovipositor of this species is similar to those of G. laricis and G. hakonensis and similar species in having the posterior projection on the processus articularis of lance relatively large, narrow in the dorsal view, and ventrally expanded slightly beyond the main body of lance in the lateral view ( Figs 5Q–U View FIGURES 5 , 8C–F View FIGURES 8 ), but it is similar to those of G. abieticola , G. socia , G. polytoma and G. hercyniae in having the sclerotized band of the radix of lancet wide and sharply bent at the twisted part ( Figs 9A–C, F, G, I, J View FIGURES 9 ).
