scientific name

Puccinia caricis Rebent.
status

Puccinia caricis Rebent.

Type:—Location of the type specimen has not been found.

Description:—See Hiratsuka et al. (1992).

Hosts and distribution in Japan:—0, I on Urtica angustifolia Fisch. (Hok, Hon), U. laetevirens Maxim. ex Hornem. (Hok, Hon), U. platyphylla Wedd. (= U. takedana Ohwi (Hok, Hon); II, III on Carex confertiflora Boott (Hok), C. forficula Franch. & Sav. (Hok), C. gmelinii Hook. & Arn. (Hok), C. ischnostachya Steud. var. ischnostachya (Hok) ( Ito 1950, Hiratsuka 1960, Hiratsuka et al. 1992).

Notes:—This species has been reported by Ito (1950) and Hiratsuka et al. (1992), but it is suspected as a species complex including many different species. Ito (1934) proved life cycle of this species. Ji et al. (2022) circumscribed five distinct species producing spermogonial and aecial stages on species of Urtica in China based on phylogenetic analyses. This species is widely recorded in the world including China, Taiwan, Korea and Russian Far East ( Ito 1950, Hiratsuka 1960, 1963, Tai 1979, Hirastuka et al. 1992, Zhuang et al. 1998, Kuo & Chen 1999, Azbukina 2005), but its taxonomic revision is required including typification. Taxonomic relationships of this species with P. caricina DC. and P. uruticata (Link) F. Kern (= Aecidium uruticae Schumach. ) also need to be clarified.
