Puccinia caricis-araliae Kakish. & Q. Wang
Replaced name:— Aecidium araliae Sawada
Type:— Neotype in TNS (F57726). Epitype in TNS (F57724).
Description:—See Kakishima and Wang (2014).
Hosts and distribution in Japan:—0, I on Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem. (Hon, Kyu), Dendropanax trifidus (Thunb.) Makino ex H. Hara (= Textoria trifida (Thunb.) Nakai ex Honda (Kyu), Heptapleurum heptaphyllum (L.) Y.F. Deng (= Agalma lutchuense Nakai , Schefflera heptaphylla (L.) Frodin) (Ryu); II, III on Carex stenostachys var. cuneata (Ohwi) Ohwi & T. Koyama (= C. cuneata Ohwi ) (Hon) ( Ito & Murayama 1943, Ito 1950, Hiratsuka 1952, 1960, Harada 1994, Kakishima & Wang 2014).
Notes:—Life cycle of this species was proved by Kakishima and Wang (2014). Aecidium araliae is the legitimate earliest name of this species. Therefore, a new combination name, based on this anamorphic species name, should be appropriate under the ICNafp Shenzhen Code ( Turland et al. 2018). Because Puccinia araliae Ellis & Everh. (1891) was a preoccupied available name Kakishima & Wang (2014) proposed a new name, P. caricis-araliae , as a replaced name for this species to avoid taxonomic confusion. Spermogonial and aecial stages of this species have been reported from China and Taiwan ( Ito 1950, Tai 1979, Hiratsuka & Chen 1991, Kakishima & Wang 2014). However, species identity of these stages needs to be reexamined.
