Frons ( Figs 2–3 View FIGURES 2–4 ) broad, about twice the width of eye at level of anterior ocellus, slightly tapering toward lunula. Orbits narrow, about 0.15 width of frons at level of anterior ors, distinctly projecting as narrow ring above eye in profile. Two strong equal reclinate ors and 3 weaker ori present. Orbital setulae reclinate, sporadic. Ocellar triangle wide, its anterior tip reaching beyond upper ors setae. First flagellomere small, rounded, short-haired. Wide facial keel present, conspicuously widening below base of antennae. Gena plus cheek at mid-point of eye 0.20 times vertical height of eye; cheek very broad anteriorly. Gena projecting forwards and forming approximately 70° angle anteriorly, vibrissal fasciculus long, broader at base and curving apically. Lunule narrow. Eye bare. Thorax. Scutum and scutellum shiny black. Scutum with 2 dc setae, anterior dc weaker and shorter, about 0.6 length of posterior dc seta, acr irregularly in 6–8 rows. One ia seta present. Legs brownish black. Wing ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 2–4 ) with base and veins brown. Squamae greyish, margin and fringe blackish. Knob and stem of halter black. Length of wing: 1.85 mm, costa extending to vein M 1+2, wing tip located between R 4+5 and M 1+2. Ratio of costal sections 2–4 = 4.74: 0.95: 1.00. Ultimate section of vein M 4+5 slightly longer than penultimate (ratio 1.15: 1.00). Abdomen brownish, matt. Male genitalia: epandrium almost hemispherical ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 5–11 ), sparsely covered with long setae, surstylus with group of numerous spines on inner surface; cerci slightly arched, reaching almost 0.5 of height of epandrium; phallus as Figs 5–6 View FIGURES 5–11 : distiphallus asymmetrical, with several distinct lobes; mesophallus tubular, long and in the middle tapered, base level agrees with that of distiphallus, inserted ventromedially into distiphallus; basiphallus fused to phallophorus, left arm vestigial, right arm extending to level of mesophallus, broad apically and extending ventroapically around shaft; hypandrium ( Figs 8–9 View FIGURES 5–11 ) with narrow, long arms; ejaculatory apodeme ( Figs 10–11 View FIGURES 5–11 ) Y-shaped with long and narrow stem, asymmetrical narrow blade, long basal process on stem is present.
Female and biology unknown.
Comments. Ophiomyia balcanica a small species superficially similar to Ophiomyia ranunculicaulis Hering, 1949 ; however, the new species differs in having a higher gena with anterior angle approximately 70°; the anterior tip of the ocellar triangle reaches slightly past the upper ors setae; 3 ori setae are present; the ultimate section of vein M 4+5 is slightly longer than the penultimate. The male genitalia are strikingly different, however, with those of the new species being more similar to Ophiomyia senecionina Hering, 1944 (see Papp & Černý 2015: Figs 206D–J), but much narrower.
