Acrotaphus chedelae Gauld, 1991 View in CoL

( Figs 38–46 View FIGURES 38–47 )

Acrotaphus chedelae Gauld, 1991: 327 View in CoL . Holotype ♀ [#CRI001 101687], Costa Rica (MNCR) [examined by digital image].

Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from all other species of Acrotaphus by the combination of the following characters: 1) margin of gena behind eyes flat in dorsal view; 2) margin of gena 0.75–0.95× length of eye in dorsal view; 3) posterior ocelli separated from eyes by 0.4–0.7× its diameter in dorsal view; 4) metasoma entirely orange or orange with tergite V blackish centrally, tergites VI+ black; 5) hind leg usually orange, with apex of femur and tibia and all tarsus blackish; 6) ovipositor robust, 1.4–1.7× as long as hind tibia.

Comments. Additional characters to the original description (♀) are as follows: body [?] 11.0–19.0 mm; mar- gin of gena behind eyes flat in dorsal view; margin of gena [?] 0.75–0.95× length of eye in dorsal view; tarsal claw with basal lobe quadrangular, with claw apex slightly overtaking the posterior margin of lobe.

Male. ( Figs 41–42 View FIGURES 38–47 ). Similar to female in structure and coloration, except margin of gena 0.6–0.9× length of eye in dorsal view; posterior ocelli separated from eyes by 0.4–0.8× its diameter in dorsal view; sternite IX ( Fig 44 View FIGURES 38–47 ) longer than high, with lateral and anterior margins strongly sclerotised and slightly concave, with few bristles widely spaced posteriorly. Genital capsule ( Figs 45–46 View FIGURES 38–47 ): Paramere truncated apically, slightly narrower than the parameral lamina, with bristles except in posterior margin; volsellar lamina with bristles anteroapically spaced in anterior margin and with a set of three bristles in anterolateral region, just below the base of the digitus; cuspis robust with about five teeth aligned in the mid part until apex and with three few bristles spaced on apical region; digitus with teeth on apex, rounded distally and angular ventrally, with the margins of the apical region narrower than base; aedeagus with few teeth in apex and its apex slightly curved downward in lateral view.

Distribution. Argentina *, Brazil, Colombia **, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay ** and Trinidad and Tobago ** ( Fig 47 View FIGURES 38–47 ).

Biological notes. Parasitoid of the Argiope argentata (Fabricius, 1775) and Metazygia sp. [mentioned as Leucage mariana (Taczanowski, 1881) by Gauld (1991)] ( Gonzaga & Sobczak, 2011).
