Priocnemis hyalinata View in CoL species-group

Priocnemis femoralis View in CoL species-group: Wolf 1963: 27, 37, 92, ♀ ♂.

Diagnosis. Males. Body length 4.0–8.0 mm. Paramere reduced, their length no more than half length of the volsella (Figs 8–13, 16–20, 31, 32, 35, 36). Preapical tooth of claw equal or larger than apical one ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 26 – 37 ). Females. Body length 5.0–10.0 mm. Preapical tooth of claw equal or larger than apical one (as in Fig. 30 View FIGURES 26 – 37 ).

Species included. Eight species. Priocnemis (Priocnemis) azumai Lelej, 1992 ( Japan: Southern Ryukyus ) ; P. (P.) fennica Haupt, 1927 (Europe; Turkey; Russia: from European part to Eastern Siberia) ; P. (P.) germana ( Cresson, 1867) (USA); P. (P.) hyalinata ( Fabricius, 1793) (Europe; Turkey; Central Asia ; Russia: from European part to Eastern Siberia) ; P. (P.) ishikawai Lelej, 1992 ( Japan: Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Tsushima); P. (P.) sugonjaevi Lelej & Loktionov, 2015 ( Russia: Far East); P. (P.) unicolor ( Gussakovskij, 1926) ( Russia: Eastern Siberia , Far East; Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu); P. (P.) yunnanensis Loktionov, Lelej & Xu , sp. nov. ( China: Yunnan).

Distribution. Nearctic Region: USA. Palaearctic Region: Europe, Turkey, Central Asia ( Uzbekistan), Russia (from European part to Far East), Japan (Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, Tsushima, Ryukyus). Oriental Region (new record): China (Yunnan).

Remarks. Priocnemis melanosoma was described by Kohl (1880: 190, ♀ ♂) from Northern Italy ("Bozeu" [Bozen], "Sigmundskron", "Trient"), as variety of P. notata Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau , which later was regarded as a separate species based on the material from Austria ( Haupt 1927: 90, 93, 110, ♀ ♂) . Haupt (1927) recognized three related species (by female and male): P. femoralis ( Dahlbom, 1829) [= P. hyalinata ( Fabricius, 1793) ], P. melanosoma Kohl, 1880 , and newly described P. fennica Haupt, 1927 . In his key ( Haupt 1927) the female of P. melanosoma was separated from other two species by completely black metasoma and male by hypopygium ventrally with posterior median longitudinal shallow furrow ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 26 – 37 ). There are only two species of this group in the Western Palaearctic, with the current taxa name as P. hyalinata and P. fennica . Both are well characterized by male genitalia and hypopygium, and (in females) by flagellomere length and other details. However, both species vary in both sexes in coloration of metasoma and legs. As a rule the specimens from northern and central Europe are more red, and specimens from southern Europe are more black up to completely black. Priocnemis melanosoma Kohl, 1880 was never examined correctly, and former authors treated black forms of any of both species as “ melanosoma ”, but the species was never defined by clear characters. In the many hundreds of specimens from Europe examined by R. Wahis, J.v. Smissen or C. Schmid-Egger were only two species of the P. hyalinata species-group (pers. comm. of Ch. Schmid-Egger). We consider P. melanosoma Kohl, 1880 , until the revision of type material, which should be deposited in Naturhistorisches Museum , Vienna, Austria, as a species with uncertain taxonomic position which in the future may be a junior subjective synonym of P. hyalinata ( Fabricius, 1793) or a senior subjective synonym of P. fennica Haupt, 1927 .
