Taxonomy. Peromyscus pirrensis Goldman, 1912 , headwaters of Rio Limon, 4500 ft (= 1372 m), Mt. Piri, Darién Province, Panama,

Isthmomys pirrensis was initially described as a species of Peromyscus following recognition of Isthmomys as subgenus under Peromyscus . Recent evidence suggests that Isthmomys is sister to Reithrodontomys instead of Peromyscus , validating its status as a valid genus. Monotypic.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 157-172 mm, tail 185-204 mm, hindfoot 36-37 mm. No specific data are available for ear measurements or body weights. The Mount Pirri Deermouse is a Neotoma-sized, Peromyscus-like rodent. Dorsum is brownish cinnamon to cinnamon rufous, lined with black hairs; venter is white, with plumbeous-colored hairs. Forefeet are white, and hindfeet are white, with dusky hair to toes. The Mount Pirri Deermouse differs from the Yellow Deermouse ( I. flavidus ) in being darker in color and having a larger hindfoot and longer more narrow skull.

Habitat. Old growth evergreen forests at elevations of 1067-1584 m in the Serrania del Darién mountain range.

Activity patterns. The Mount Pirri Deermouse is presumably nocturnal.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Least Concern on The IUCN Red List.
