Taxonomy. Peromyscus guatemalensis tropicalis Goodwin, 1932 View in CoL , Chimoxan, about 40 mi (= 64 km) NE Coban, Alta Verapaz, 1500 ft (= 457 m), Guatemala.

Peromyscus tropicalis is in the mexicanus species group. It was initially described as subspecies of P. guatemalensis , but it was later placed in synonomy with P. mexicanus saxatilis. Recent DNA studies suggest that some of what historically was recognized as P. g. tropicalis or P. m. saxatilis should be considered a distinct species, P. tropicalis . Monotypic.
