Taxonomy. Thomasomys popayanus J. A. Allen, 1912 View in CoL , “crest of Western Andes (Alt. 10,340 ft. [= 3152 m]), 40 miles [= 64 km] west of Popayan [Popayan], Cauca, Colombia.”
This species is monotypic.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 145-164 mm, tail 201-218 mm, hindfoot 33-38 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. The Popayan Oldfield Mouse is moderately large, with general color similar to the Golden Oldfield Mouse (1. aureus ). Dorsal pelage is long, thick, and not very fine, yellowish rufous lined with black, with faint but dark median band along midline; top of head is darker than back and slightly grayish; and whole ventral surface and inside of limbs are deep ocherous buff from throat to base of tail. Hindfeet are long, moderately broad, and with upper metatarsal dark brown and digits whitish; under surfaces of hindfeet are blackish brown. Tail is long, dull grayish brown, unicolored, finely annulated, and covered with very short hair, with slight, barely distinguishable, tuft at tip.
Habitat. Montane forests at elevations of 1830-3300 m.
