Taxonomy of A. toba is poorly resolved. Monotypic.
Distribution. SE Bolivia, W Paraguay, extreme SW Brazil, and N Argentina . View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 91-126 mm, tail 67-85 mm, ear 16-20 mm, hindfoot 24-27 mm; weight 25-57 g. The Toba Grass Mouse is a moderately large species of Akodon . Dorsum is olivaceous, finely ticked with gray; eye-ring is present but not clearly defined; venteris frosted grayish, white, or buffy; some specimens have white spot on chin; and tail is sharply bicolored.
Habitat. Chacoan ecoregion, including grassland, patches of forest intermingled with palm savanna, marshland, thorn forest, semiarid scrublands, and gallery forest, at elevations below 1000 m.

Breeding. Shedding by Toba Grass Mice was recorded in November.
