Taxonomy. Oxymycterus paramensis Thomas, 1902 View in CoL , “Choquecamate [= Choque-camata, Cochabamba], 4000 m,” Bolivia.

Taxonomy of O. paramensis is poorly resolved. Monotypic.

Descriptive notes. Head-body 105-160 mm, tail 75-124 mm, ear 15-23 mm, hindfoot 25-32 mm; weight 41-87 g. See general characters of the genus under the Amazonian Hocicudo ( O. amazonicus ) account. Dorsum of the Paramo Hocicudo is deep olive buff, strongly lined with black on anterior one-half of body, and brownish with less contrasting black lines over rump; venter is pale buff to yellowish gray; and tail is bicolored and well-haired. Hands and feet of adults are covered by ocherous or buff hair, contrasting young that are dark and have darker feet and tail.

Habitat. Mainly elfin forest, Polylepis (Rosaceae) forest, upper montane forest, and Yungas forests at elevations of 700-4000 m. The Paramo Hocicudo can be found in primary and secondary forests.

Food and Feeding. The Paramo Hocicudo mainly eats insects and other invertebrates, seeds, and grasses.

Breeding. Female Paramo Hocicudos have been collected with five embryos.

Activity patterns. The Paramo Hocicudo is diurnal and nocturnal.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Least Concern on The IUCN Red Lust.
