TYPE SPECIES: Sciurus volans Linnaeus, 1758 .

SYNONYMS: Sciuropterus F. Cuvier, 1825 .

COMMENTS: Sciuropterus was previously employed for this genus by Simpson (1945:80); he believed Pteromys to be a synonym of Petaurista , but Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951:466) presented evidence for the validity of Pteromys .
