TYPE SPECIES: Sciurus (Xerus) brachyotis Hemprich and Ehrenberg, 1833 (= Sciurus rutilus Cretzchmar, 1828 ).

SYNONYMS: Euxerus Thomas, 1909 ; Geosciurus Smith, 1834 .

COMMENTS: Includes Euxerus, Geosciurus , and Xerus as subgenera ( Amtmann, 1975; Ellerman, 1940; Moore, 1959).
