TYPE LOCALITY: "Eastern Mexico." Restricted by Nelson (18996:88) to "near Las Vigas [Veracruz] Mexico."

DISTRIBUTION: Mexico: San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, Mexico, Queretaro and Guanajuato.

SYNONYMS: capistratus Lichtenstein, 1830; melanonotus Thomas, 1890; shawi Dalquest, 1950; tolucae Nelson, 1898.

COMMENTS: Subgenus Sciurus ( Hall, 1981:430) .
