TYPE LOCALITY: Italy, near Pisa .
DISTRIBUTION: Italy; Sicily; S. France.
COMMENT: Subgenus Parapitymys ; see Chaline, 1978, Cahiers de 1'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Montpellier, 1 / 4:145 -167. Corbet, 1978:109, and WDS included pyrenaicus (= gerbei ) and felteni , for which St. Girons, 1973, Les Mammiferes du France et du Benelux, p. 342-344, Winking, 1974, Symp. Ther. II, Prague, p. 267-273, and Petrov et al., 1976, Senckenberg. Biol., 57 (l/3):l-10, provided evidence of specific distinctness.
