Falsocaenia breveapicalis Pic, 1930: 84 — syn. n.

Falsocaenia decipiens var. breveapicalis: Pic, 1933

Type material. Calopteron decipiens : 12 syntypes, “ Panama, V. de Chiriqui, Champion “ ( BMNH) . Holotype of Falsocaenia breveapicalis ( Pic, 1922) , female, Costa Rica: San José ( MNHN) .

Diagnosis. This is the only representative of the genus Falsocaenia having almost whole elytra orange.

Redescription. Broad lateral pronotal margins, whole elytra (except small darker area around scutellum) and apex of antennomere 11 orange, front trochanters, bases of front femora and maxillary palpomere 1–2 sometimes yellow to light brown, other body-parts dark brown ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ). Eyes medium-sized, distance between eyes 1.2x longer than maximal eye diameter. Terminal palpomere of maxillary palpi narrowed distally. Antennae reaching elytral 2/3, antennomere 3 as long as 4 ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 31 – 41 ). Pronotum ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 16 – 30 ) 1.5x wider at base than long medially, anterior margin strongly produced forwards, slightly pointed medially. Elytra 3.6x longer than humeral width, widened to distal third. Male genitalia slender with parameres strongly narrowed basally, distal enlargement circular ( Fig. 54–56 View FIGURES 54 – 65 ). Female genitalia broad, styli stout ( Fig. 71 View FIGURES 69 – 76 ). Body length: 5.2–10.6 mm, humeral width: 1.3–2.6 mm. Comments on synonymic changes:

After a detailed examination of syntypes of Falsocaenia decipiens and the holotype of F. breveapicalis , the species Falsocaenia breveapicalis Pic, 1930 is considered to be a younger subjective synonym of Falsocaenia decipiens (Gorham, 1884) .
