Leucophenga setipalpis Duda, 1923 View in CoL
( Figs. 2C View FIGURE 2 , 5G–I View FIGURE 5 , 9D, 9E View FIGURE 9 , 13E, 13F View FIGURE 13 , 19 View FIGURE 19 )
Leucophenga setpalpis Duda, 1923: 31, 1924: 189 ; Lin & Wheeler, 1972: 251.
Diagnosis. This species is most similar to L. zebrina sp. nov. in having the mesonotum mostly brownish yellow ( Figs. 5H View FIGURE 5 , 8Q View FIGURE 8 ), the pleura with a brown, longitudinal stripe above ( Figs. 5I View FIGURE 5 , 8R View FIGURE 8 ), the wing slightly brownish along the tip of R 2+3 and dm-cu crossvein ( Figs. 2C View FIGURE 2 , 4F View FIGURE 4 ), and the shape and pubescence of epandrium, cercus, and surstylus ( Figs. 19A View FIGURE 19 , 37A View FIGURE 37 ), but can be distinguished from the latter by the colour patterns of abdominal tergites ( Fig. 9D, E View FIGURE 9 ); paramere anteroventrally with a projection ( Fig. 19C View FIGURE 19 ); aedeagus basolaterally with a small process, laterally with a long process at same its height; the long process bearing 2 sensilla at tip ( Fig. 19D View FIGURE 19 ); see below for that species.
The specimens employed here are somewhat different from Duda’s (1923) descriptions of the only female holotype from Taiwan, China in the wing slightly brownish along the tip of R 2+3 and dm-cu crossvein ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ), and the colour patterns of abdominal tergites ( Fig. 9D, E View FIGURE 9 ). However, this is a “normal” species with numerous specimens. Moreover, some of these specimens were collected near the type locality. Therefore, all of the specimens were identified as L. setipalpis to avoid further confusion.
Description. Ocellar triangle dark brown, with ca. 1 or 2 seta(e) above ocellar setae. Frons brownish ( Fig. 5G View FIGURE 5 ). Pedicel brownish yellow; first flagellomere yellow ( Fig. 5G View FIGURE 5 ). Clypeus brownish yellow medially and brownish laterally. Palpus brownish ( Fig. 5G View FIGURE 5 ). Postpronotal lobe yellow ( Fig. 5I View FIGURE 5 ). Acrostichal setulae in ca. 12–14 irregular rows ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ). Scutellum brownish yellow to brownish, brown to dark brown laterally, yellow at tip ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ). Pleura with a brown, longitudinal stripe above ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ). Katepisternum and mesopleuron mostly yellowish to yellow ( Fig. 5I View FIGURE 5 ). Wing ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ): Costal vein between R and R 4+5 distally with ca. 5 or 6 peg-like spinules on ventral surface; R 4+5 and M 1 nearly parallel distally; halter mostly yellowish, with a brownish yellow patch at knob ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ). Abdominal tergites black, 2nd tergite yellow medially and laterally, 3rd tergite not shortened in males ( Fig. 9D, E View FIGURE 9 ), yellow anteriorly, sometimes also yellow laterally, 4th tergite yellow anteriorly. Male terminalia: Epandrium lacking pubescence, with ca. 7 setae near posterior margin per side ( Fig. 19A View FIGURE 19 ). Cercus lacking pubescence ( Fig. 19A View FIGURE 19 ). Surstylus pubescent ( Fig. 19A View FIGURE 19 ). Paramere narrow basally, with ca. 6 sensilla distally ( Fig. 19C View FIGURE 19 ).
