SUBGENUS ERCTELLA MONTEROSATO, 1894

Type species by subsequent designation ( Barker, 1999: 62): Helix mazzullii De Cristofori & Jan, 1832 .

Remarks: Colomba et al. (2011) stated that the type species of Erctella was designated by Pilsbry (1895: 316). However, Pilsbry (1895) only mentioned that Erctella was established ‘for H. mazzullii ’ and missed that Monterosato (1894) included Helix (Erctella) costae Benoit, 1857 as a second nominal species in Erctella or considered this unimportant because he included H. costae in the synonymy of H. mazzullii . This does not constitute a valid type species designation (see also: Welter-Schultes, 2012). Welter-Schultes (2012) suggested that Schileyko (2006) was the first to designate the type species of Erctella . However, this had already been done by Barker (1999). It does not matter that Barker (1999) erroneously thought that H. mazzullii is the type species of Erctella by monotypy [as Schileyko (2006) also did; ICZN, 1999: Article 69.1.1].
