Material examined

5 males ( ZMB # 4526), Kerguelen Island, June 1883.

Remarks

The description by Studer (1883) is of little value for modern taxonomy, but examination of the type material revealed that the rostrum of A. spectabilis and A. hermaphroditicus (as photographed by Lang 1953) are identical, and both lack the ventral spine diagnostic of A. nipponicus . Although the original description cannot be used, there is no need to redescribe this species as the later description ( Lang 1953) is deemed adequate. As Lang (1953:351, plate 1) only used photographs to illustrate the habitus, a dorsal habitus drawing is presented here to supplement his description.
