Paduniella burmana , new species

Figs 1–3 View FIGURES 1 – 3

Paduniella burmana , new species is unique in having a combination of deeply bifurcating main branch of inferior appendages; a long, anteriorly orienting, narrow dorsal part of sternite IX; and a wide drop-shaped apex of phallicata. The species resembles P. f i s s a Martynov ( India) from which it is separated by the presence of a convex dorsal margin of the basal part of inferior appendages, narrower distal part of inferior appendages, and apical lobes of the main branch of inferior appendages are not diverging. The species also resembles P. siveci Chantaramongkol & Malicky , P. methinee Chantaramongkol & Malicky , and P. thitima Chantaramongkol & Malicky (all Sri Lanka) in the presence of a bifurcating apex of the inferior appendages. Paduniella burmana , new species is separated from all these species in the shape of sternites IX and the phallic apparatus. Also P. sabarmata , new species has deeply bifurcating apex of inferior appendages, but in that species the sternites IX are broader ventrally, the superior appendages are broader, the inferior appendages are more parallel-sided in lateral view, the median process of the phallic apparatus has a dorsal, sub-apical lobe, and the phallicata is symmetrically drop-shaped at the apex.

Male genitalia. Sternite IX club-shaped in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); wide ventral parts with almost straight, parallel-sided anterior and posterior margins, 3 times wider than narrow dorsal part; dorsally curving gently anterad along its length, sub-parallel, joining tergite IX at mid-height of genitalia. Sternite IX with narrow dorsal part in right angle to broad ventral part. Tergite IX widening distally into broad plate in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); with convex dorsal margin. Superior appendages separate from tergite IX by suture; basis slightly narrower than widest part of sternite IX in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); slightly longer than wide part of sternite IX; tapering apically. Median branch of inferior appendages with convex dorsal margin; about as wide as main branch of inferior appendages in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ), slightly wider in ventral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); originating before mid-length of main branch ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); about parallel-sided in ventral view; covered by setae. Ventral lobe of inferior appendages with nearly straight ventral margin in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ), weakly producing posterad; in ventral view forming pair of nearly rectangular processes covered by setae. Main branch of inferior appendages about parallel-sided distally of origin of median branch ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ); apices deeply bifurcating, producing dorsal and ventral lobes running parallel; dorsal lobes slightly longer than ventral lobes; slightly curving mesally towards apices ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Phallic apparatus connected to sternite IX and tergite IX by long, slender, sigmoid sternal strip ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Phallobase forming short dorsal and long ventral structures; ventral part of phallobase parallel-sided, about as long as sternal strip; anterior part curving dorsad; dorsal part of phallobase short, about as wide as ventral part. Median process long, needle-shaped, undulating; originating from dorsal part of phallobase; apex exceeding phallicata ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Phallicata basally slender after origin of paramere; parallel-sided; widening into asymmetrically drop-shaped distal part of apex, distal part of apex covered by long microtrichia. Paramere running along dorsal margin of phallicata, separating immediately before apex ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ).
