Taxonomy. Original description: Mugil chanos Fabricius,1775:74 , xiv [ Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Red Sea (not Mediterranean Sea); Holotype: ZMUC P17154 (dry skin) ]. Synonyms: Chanos arabicus Lacepède, 1803 View in CoL .
Status in the Arabian Peninsula. Recorded from Saudi Arabia in original description by Forsskål (1775), subsequently reported from Oman by Esmaeili et al. (2022).
General distribution. Red Sea; Indo-Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mascarenes and Persian Gulf east to Hawaiian Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia) and Norfolk Island; eastern Pacific: southern California ( U.S.A.) south to northern Peru, including Galapagos Islands ( Ecuador); Mediterranean Sea immigrant. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
Distribution in the Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia: coastal area of Jeddah; Oman: Wadi Hasik, Dhofar Governorate, and probably several other coastal area of the Arabian Peninsula.
Economic importance. Commercially important.
Conservation. Least Concern (LC).
