11. Veronica rosea Desfontaines (1798: 13) View in CoL [Iconography: Dobignard & Jordan 1987, Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ]

Stems (5) 10–20 (40) cm long, decumbent to erect, pilose or puberulent (rarely subglabrous), covered by eglandular hairs variable in length (<0.1–0.7 mm), usually incurvate, appressed and antrorse sometimes concentrated in 2 opposite lines; apical shoot bearing (2) 3–8 (9) pairs of leaves. Leaves (5) 15–20 (25) × (1) 3–4 (7) mm; the basal ones most usually elliptic or ovate to suborbicular; the medium ones linear-lanceolate, oblanceolate, ovate to elliptic, ± deeply dentate to pinnatifid; cuneate to obtuse at the base, subrevolute to revolute, subglabrous or pilose, sparsely to densely covered by hairs (0.1) 0.2–0.7 (0.9) mm long, shortly petiolate; apical shoot leaves opposite usually linear to oblanceolate, entire (rarely dentate), revolute. Racemes axillary, almost always opposite, bearing

(5) 10–35 (60) flowers, loosely to densely arranged; peduncles 1–9 cm long, subglabrous or covered by the same type of indument as that of the stem; bracts (1) 3.5–5 (8) mm long, linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, entire, subglabrous or pilose; pedicels (1.5) 3–4 (6) mm long. Calyx 3–5 (6.5) mm long; 4 (5) sepals, linear-lanceolate to oblanceolate, most usually shorter than the capsule, subglabrous or pilose, with eglandular hairs. Corolla (8) 10–14 (20) cm in diameter, blue, rarely pale pink or white. Capsule (2) 3.5–4 (6.5) × (1.5) 3.5–4 (6) mm, slightly longer than wide, slightly wider than long or as long as wide, obcordate, obovate to widely obovate or suborbicular, ± rounded at the base, usually emarginate, sinus up to 0.9 mm depth, glabrous or pilose, with eglandular hairs. Style (3.5) 5–6.5 mm long. Seeds 1–2 × 0.7–1.8 mm, ca. 6–10 per capsule.

Chromosome Number: —2 n = 16.

Habitat: —Dry and stony meadows, thorny shrublands, rocky places, and forest glades; soil indifferent; (700) 800–3,500 (3,740) m.

Distribution: —NW Africa; N Algeria and Morocco ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ).

Phenology: —Flowering from April to July.

Notes: — Veronica rosea is morphologically very variable. As a result, many infraspecific taxa have been described ( Andrés-Sánchez et al. 2009, Rojas-Andrés et al. 2016). Despite this morphological variability, V. rosea constitutes a monophyletic lineage according to AFLP ( Martínez-Ortega et al. 2004) and DNA sequence data ( Rojas-Andrés et al. 2015).
