12. Veronica satureiifolia Poiteau & Turpin (1809: 18) View in CoL . [Iconography: Martínez-Ortega et al. 2009, lám. 91 sub V. scheereri ( Brandt 1961: 80) Holub (1973: 177) ]

Stems (2) 5–15 (25) cm long, decumbent (rarely ascending), the vegetative ones prostrate sometimes forming very compact lawns, sparsely or densely covered by short and fine eglandular hairs (0.1) 0.2–0.5 (0.7) mm long, incurvate, appressed and antrorse, not concentrated in 2 opposite lines along the stem; apical shoot bearing 2–12 pairs of leaves. Leaves (3) 5–25 (30) × (1) 2–8 (12) mm, the basal and medium ones similar, linear-lanceolate, narrowly elliptic, oblong-lanceolate, elliptic or ovate, generally ± cuneate or narrowly cuneate at the base, subentire, denticulate or crenulate, frequently revolute, glabrous or rarely subglabrous and in this case with very short hairs up to 0.15 (0.2) mm long, arranged mostly on the primary vein, the leaf base and along the margin, shortly petiolate; apical shoot leaves opposite, linear to narrowly elliptic or lanceolate, subentire, frequently revolute. Racemes axillary, opposite, bearing (4) 15–20 (30) flowers, loosely to densely arranged; peduncles 1–4 cm long, indument similar to that of the stem; bracts (1) 1.5–4 (7) mm long, narrowly elliptic, entire, glabrous or exceptionally subglabrous and in this case with very short hairs along the margin; pedicels 1–3 (6.5) mm long. Calyx (2) 2.5–4 (5) mm long, (4) 5 sepals, linear-lanceolate, almost always shorter than the capsule, glabrous or very rarely, those of the lower flowers puberulent, with a very few short eglandular hairs. Corolla (7) 10–13 (15) mm in diameter, intense blue. Capsule 3–5 (5.5) × 2.5–4.5 (5) mm, generally slightly longer than wide, widely obovate to obcordate or suborbicular, rounded at the base, emarginate, sinus up to 0.6 mm depth, glabrous or puberulent, with eglandular hairs. Style 3–5 mm long. Seeds 0.8–1.4 × 0.5–1.1 mm, ca. 8–16 per capsule.

ROJAS-ANDRÉS & MARTÍNEZ-ORTEGA

Chromosome Number: —2 n = 32.

Habitat: —Dry and stony pastures, rocky and sometimes grazed places, on sandy soils, acid substrate or, more frequently, on limestones; (100) 1,000 –2,000 (2,400) m.

Distribution: —W and CW Europe; E France, S Germany, NE Spain (Pyrenees), and N Switzerland ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 ).

Phenology: —Flowering from May to July (August).

Notes: — Veronica satureiifolia was described by Poiteau and Turpin in 1809 from the environments of Paris. This name was later combined under V. prostrata as a variety ( Reichenbach 1831 –1832) and a form ( Watzl 1910). However, it has not been widely used during the 20 th century.

The morphological similarity between these plants and V. scheereri , described under V. prostrata by J.-P. Brandt (1961), led Martínez-Ortega et al. (2009) to suspect that they might be the same species. Indeed, and in spite of this uncertainty, V. satureiifolia appears as the correct name for V. scheereri in Fischer (2011).

In a cytotypic survey of V. subsect. Pentasepalae associated with the present study ( Rojas-Andrés 2015), we have found that those populations traditionally identified as V. satureiifolia occurring near Paris are tetraploid. In our opinion V. satureiifolia and V. scheereri should be considered the same species, and according to the principle of priority, V. satureiifolia prevails at the specific level.
