Geographical distribution. Southeastern Pacific Ocean (Castro et al. 2004).
Remarks. No material of this species was collected by the 1998–1999 expeditions. Garth’s (1973) record of this species was not included by Castro (1997) in his synonymy of the trapeziids of French Polynesia but in the same publication listed a specimen collected from the island, so its presence there is confirmed. Trapezia areolata is endemic to the southeastern Pacific , including French Polynesia, Pitcairn Islands , and Easter Island ( Castro 2000). The species, like all other species of Trapezia , is an obligate symbiont of scleractinian (pocilloporid) corals ( Castro 2015).
