Small shrub 1–1.5 m. Young stems, leaf blades and hypanthium with smooth hairs. Blades elliptic and flowers 4- merous; in Peruvian specimens, each flower subtended by two pairs of bracteoles. Petals purple.

Distribution in Peru:—Paramos, in shrublands around lakes, between 3500 and 3700 m.
