18. Grammatophora marina (Lyngbye) Kützing Fig. 22 View FIGURES 9–22

References: Giffen (1975), p. 81; Navarro (1982c), p. 258, fig. 35; Witon & Witkowski (2006), figs 103 and 104.

Samples: Moen2_ Halimeda View in CoL

Dimensions: 25.6 μm long; 26 striae in 10 μm.

Diagnostics: Valves lanceolate, sometimes inflated at the center, septa with a wave near the apex then nearly flat.

Comments: Grammatophora oceanica Ehrenberg and G. marina are difficult to distinguish, and each has had a wealth of varieties and synonymies ( VanLandingham 1971). As described and keyed by Hustedt (1927 –1966), G. oceanica is narrowly linear, not inflated in the center, and has 20–24 striae in 10 μm, whereas G. marina is “mostly” inflated in the center and has 15–20 (rarely to 22) striae in 10 μm. Álvarez-Blanco & Blanco (2014) summarize the morphometrics from the literature for both species. There is considerable variation in the shape of the septa in girdle view, especially as cells get shorter, but both have a distinct wave a short distance from the apex and the rest of the septum is flat ( Hustedt 1927 –1966). We have reported G. oceanica from Guam ( Lobban et al. 2012, Lobban & Ashworth 2014a), and the illustrations published are consistent with Hustedt’s concept, but other Guam specimens ( Lobban et al. 2009 –2018, http://www.protistcentral.org/Taxa/get/taxa_id/232512) fit G. marina .
