Ty p e M a t e r i a l. H o l o t y p e m a l e l a b e l e d “ PANAMA: Canal Zone, Barro Colorado Isl., V-1976, H. Wolda ” and with my red holotype label. Allotype female with same data and my red allotype label. One male paratype labeled “ PANAMA - Canal Zone, Barro Colorado Island, 2 June 1956, Carl W. and Marian E. Rettenmeyer, No.”. Two male paratypes labeled “ PANAMA: Colón Prov., Ft. Sherman, Pavon Hill, VI-3-1995, at light, B. Ratcliffe and M. Jameson ”. One female paratype labeled “ PANAMA C. Z., Barro Colorado I., 16-27-I-1985, H. Wolda, L. T., at ground level”. One female paratype labeled “ BARRO COLORADO C. Z., Lights: Weir/SM-I. III, 24-III-1977, Coll. H. Wolda ”. One female paratype labeled “Panama, Barro Colo. Aug. 31, 1965, Col. H. Voris ”. All paratypes with my yellow paratype label.
Holotype and allotype deposited at the University of Nebraska State Museum (Lincoln, NE) . Paratypes deposited at the U. S. National Collection (Washington, D. C.), Ron McPeak collection (Battleground, WA), and Brett C. Ratcliffe collection (Lincoln, NE) .
Holotype. Male.Length 18.1 mm, width 13.0 mm. Color black. Head: Hollow of vertex deep, smooth inside. Frons rugose. Short horn present on each side of head; horn conical, stout, erect. Clypeus triangular, apex acute and sharply reflexed, surface transversely rugopunctate; clypeal carina extending from clypeal apex to base of each tubercle absent. Interocular width equals 3.3 transverse eye diameters; antenna with 10 segments, club a little longer than segments 2–7. Mandibles narrow, arcuate on lateral edge, apex subacute. Pronotum: Median, longitudinal furrow narrow, deep, extending from near base to just past middle where it joins small, transverse fovea. Furrow with moderately large punctures, fovea with transverse rugae. Strong tubercle present immediately behind anterior margin. Disc either side of furrow moderately densely punctate, punctures moderately large, becoming slightly denser along lateral margins; anterior angles with large, transverse, mostly confluent punctures. Base with complete marginal bead. Elytra: Rows of punctures equidistant from one another, in furrows; punctures large, ocellate-umbilicate, separated by 1–2 puncture diameters from each other. Intervals convex, shiny, all subequal in height and width, with sparse, small punctures. Pygidium: Surface with punctures moderately large, ocellate, setigerous; setae minute to short, tawny. In lateral view, surface evenly and strongly convex. Legs: Protibia quadridentate, apical 2 teeth obliquely truncate and closer to one another than to other teeth. Apex of metatibia with 2 large teeth subequal in size. Apex of basal tarsomere of metatarsus extended into long, slender spine. Venter: Prosternal process short, glabrous, apex broadly rounded, posterior surface with transverse furrow, base with subacute lobe. Parameres: Each paramere with a medially projecting lobe crossing opposing lobe, lobes turning downwards at apex; lobes crossing either left over right or right over left ( Figs. 5–6 View Figs ).
Allotype. Female. Length 19.1 mm, width 13.0 mm. As holotype except in the following respects: Head: Hollow of vertex with a few moderately large punctures, an erect tubercle on each side of head instead of a short horn, and interocular width equals 3.6 transverse eye diameters. Legs: Left front leg missing tarsomeres 4–5.
Paratypes. Males (3). Length 25.9–28.8 mm, width 12.3–13.6 mm. The male paratypes do not differ significantly from the holotype. One specimen has the pronotal surface slightly more densely punctate.
Females (3). Length 18.3–18.5 mm, width 13.0– 13.1 mm. The female paratypes do not differs significantly from the allotype. One specimen has the interocular width of 3.4 transverse eye diameters.
Etymology. A Zonian is a dweller, usually a person, associated with the Panama Canal Zone, a political entity that existed between 1903 and the absorption of the Canal Zone into the Republic of Panama between 1980 and 2000.
Distribution. Phileurus zonianis is known only from Barro Colorado Island in the area of the former Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama ( Fig. 8 View Fig , 9 View Fig ).
Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the smooth hollow of the vertex in males, pronotum densely punctate either side of median furrow, elytral intervals all subequal in height and with sparse, small punctures, apex of the metatibia with two strong teeth, prosternal process glabrous, and form of the parameres where the median lobe of each paramere angles downwards ( Figs. 5–6 View Figs ).
This species was overlooked in my treatment of the Dynastinae of Costa Rica and Panama (Ratcliffe 2003).
Biology. Other than being attracted to lights, nothing is known of the life history of this species. All of the specimens were taken in lowland rainforest.
