Type: — BORNEO. Sabah: Kinabalu, Penokok, 2500 ft, 1892, Haviland 1344 (lectotype K [ K000979568 ] here designated; isolectotypes K [ K000979569 ], SING [ SING0197240 About SING ]) .
Small tree 2–5 m high. Twigs terete to angular, 5–12 mm diameter, densely stellate- to dendroid-hairy, glabrescent. Leaves ovate, 15.5–46 by 6.7–19.5 cm, index 2.3–3.0, base attenuate, ± decurrent along petiole, apex acute or acuminate, above dark green or blackish, with scattered stellate hairs, glabrescent, below densely stellate-hairy, midrib and nerves flat to sunken above, nerves 11–13 per side, 9–20 mm apart; petiole 0.5–3(–7.5) cm long, grooved, densely stellate hairy. Inflorescences 6–11 cm long, peduncle 1–2 cm long, densely stellate-hairy. Bracts narrowly ovate, recurved, 6–13 mm long, both sides densely stellate-hairy. Pedicels 5–13 mm long, densely stellate-hairy. Bracteoles linear, recurved, 2–5 mm long, densely stellate-hairy. Calyx tubular, 17–20 mm long, tube 15 mm long, 4- or 5-dentate, teeth of upper lip ± triangular, 3 by 3 mm, teeth of lower lip ovate, 3 by 2.5–5.0 mm; outside villous with stellate hairs, inside with very few unbranched hairs; in fruit slightly larger, more globose and torn. Corolla light yellow, keels slightly darker, 15–30 mm long, tube 13–20 mm long, curved, upper lip semicircular, 6 by 8–10 mm, slightly notched, lateral lobes of lower lip broadly ovate, 10 by 5 mm, median lobe of lower lip spathulate, 10 by 5 mm; outside upper part of tube and lips densely stellate hairy, inside with some unbranched hairs in lower part. Stamens: short filaments 7–8 mm long, long filaments 10–11 mm long, with some unbranched hairs in lower part; anthers 1.8–2.3 by 1.2–1.5 mm, glabrous; staminode absent. Ovary ovoid, 6 by 3 cm, glabrous; style 11 mm long, glabrous; stigmas broadly elliptic, 3 by 2 mm, glabrous. Fruits globose, green, 9–10 by 6–8 mm, glabrous. Seeds disc-like, 0.4–0.5 by 0.4–0.5 mm, very narrowly winged, pitted.
Distribution: —Borneo: Sabah (Crocker Range, Mount Kinabalu, Penampang, Trus Madi Forest Reserve), Sarawak (Limbang). Sulawesi: South Sulawesi (Todjambu), Southeast Sulawesi (North Kolaka) ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).
Habitat: —Oak-laurel forest on Crocker Formation (Beaman et al. 10497), lower montane forest, secondary vegetation along roads. Soil: ultrabasic (SAN 147520). Elevation: 1100–1800 m.
Phenology: —Flowering: March, July, September, November, December; fruiting: February, July, September, December.
Notes: —One of the leaves of a pair may be smaller. The leaf margin is more clearly dentate than that of B. tomentosa .
