Vespertilio caliginosus Tomes, 1859 View in CoL
Tomes, R.F. (1859) Description of six hitherto undescribed species of bats. Proceedings of the Zoological Society London, 1859: 73 [68–79].
Valid name: Myotis muricola Gray, 1846
Referred specimen: ZMB 3118, body in alcohol (in very poor condition), skull extracted, female, adult; Chota-Nagpore, Himalaya; collected by Prochnow.
Comment : In the general catalogue Peters annotated ZMB 3118 View Materials as being the original for the description (see also Peters 1866: 401). However , Tomes (1859) had described this species on the basis of a specimen supplied to him from “ India ”, no collector or more exact locality was mentioned. According to Jenkins (2004, online list of mammal types in the BMNH) the BMNH holds a “type” specimen ( BMNH 1907.1.1.512), presumably the holotype .
