Phyllostoma Bennettii Gray, 1838
Gray, J.E. (1838) A revision of the genera of bats ( Vespertilionidae ), and the description of some new genera and species. Magazine of Zoology and Botany, 2: 483 [483–505].
Valid name: Mimon bennettii (Gray, 1838)
Referred specimens (marked with type *; Peters, 1867: 469): ZMB 3350 View Materials a–b (two specimens), bodies in alcohol, skulls extracted, females, adults; “Albina Maroni” = Albina, Marowijne river, Suriname; collected by Kappler.
Comment: Annotations in the general catalogue identify both specimens as originals of the description. Although Peters (1867: 469) compared the holotype of Phyllostoma Bennettii (in BMNH) with these ZMB specimens, ZMB 3350 View Materials a– b are not paratype specimens of Ph. Bennettii, as Gray‘s description contains no information on the collector, number of specimens or on an exact locality, except S America, and therefore no relation to the specimens collected by Kappler can be deduced from Gray’s description of the species .
