Sundevall, C. J. (1843) Om slägtet Sorex, med nagra nya arters beskrifning. Kongliga svenska Vetenskaps-Akademiens Handlingar Stockholm, 1843 [for 1842]: 207 [163–282].

Valid name: Mops midas (Sundevall, 1843)

Syntype: ZMB 535 View Materials , skin, skull not extracted; [Dar] Sennar, Sudan; collected by Hedenborg, presumably in 1834 or 1835 .

Comment: The description was based on many specimens, and no holotype was fixed. Two further syntypes are in ZSM (No. 40, skin without skull; leg. Hedenborg, Sennar 1836, donated by Sundevall 1844; and an unnumbered, skin and skull; leg. Hedenborg, donated by Clot Bey 1846), and in BMNH (No. 1846.6.2.20). The type locality given by Hedenborg (1839) was subsequently challenged and generally assumed to be “Bahr el-Abiad, White Nile ”. Hartmann (1863: 487, Dysopes mydas [sic!]) erroneously stated that Hedenborg discovered this species in the Jebel el-Funj (once southern Dar Sennar = Blue Nile Prov.), and this information was subsequently followed by Kock (1969: 154). Koopman (1975: 429) quoted the type locality as “west bank of the White Nile, in the neighbourhood of 11°45’N – 33°30’E, Blue Nile Prov.”, however, these coordinates place the type locality far to the east of the White Nile, corresponding to the Jebel el-Funj, as it is also shown in Koopman (1975: fig. 59). Later, Koopman (1993) made this type area a summary of all possibilities: “ Blue Nile; White Nile River, West bank, Jebel el Funj”. The type locality is here restricted to Valid Sohey (= Wad Shala’i, 14°34’N – 32°13’48’’E), e-bank White Nile, Blue Nile Prov., Sudan.
