Scotophilus gouldii Gray, 1841 View in CoL
Gray, J.E. (1841) Contributions towards the geographical distribution of the Mammalia in Australia, with notes on some recently discovered species in a letter addressed to the Author. Appendix C. 405 [397–414] in Grey, G. Journals of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-west and Western Australia During the Years 1837, 38, and 39, Under the Authority of Her Majesty's Government. Describing many newly discovered, important, and fertile districts, with observations on the moral and physical condition of the aboriginal inhabitants, &c. &c. London: T. & W. Boone Vol. 2 vii 482 pp.
Valid name: Chalinolobus gouldii (Gray, 1841)
Syntype: ZMB 2601 View Materials , skin; Van Diemensland (= Tasmania), Australia; donated by Gould .
Comment : The description of S. gouldii was based on two specimens from New South Wales and the east part of Australia as well as on seven specimens from the “Island of Van Diemen´s Land” (Tasmania), however, Gray did not desigante a holotype. ZMB 2601 View Materials is marked in the general catalogue with a type asterisk by Peters. A further type is listed as such in the register and catalogues of the BMNH (1841.1.5.16). Hence both specimens, the ZMB 2601 View Materials and BMNH 1841.1 .5.16, should be considered syntypes [Paula Jenkins, pers. comm.]. The whereabouts of the other syntype specimens is unknown .
