Scotophilus variegatus Tomes, 1861 View in CoL
Tomes, R.F. (1861) Notes on a collection of bats made by Mr. Andersson in the Damara Country, South-western Africa, with notices of some other African species. Proceedings of the Zoological Society London, 1861, I: 36 [31–40].
Valid name: Glauconycteris variegata (Tomes, 1861)
Syntype: ZMB 3033 View Materials , skin and skull (damaged), male; Otjoro, Namibia; collected by Andersson, 1 December 1859, donated by or in exchange with Tomes .
Comment: According to a catalogue entry by Peters this specimen is an original exemplar of Tomes description. ZMB 3033 agrees with locality, collector and the exact collecting date in Tomes’ description. Dobson (1875: 388) mentioned that the “type” is in Berlin. O. Thomas considered that two specimens he saw in the Tomes collection matched the measurements given in Tomes’ original description (see Thomas 1905: 77). Tomes did not specify the number of specimens he examined, hence we consider ZMB 3033 as well as the both specimens ex coll. Tomes (= BMNH 1907.1.1.437–438 skins and skulls) as syntypes.
