Epomophorus pusillus Peters, 1868 View in CoL
Peters, W.C.H. (1868) Eine Übersicht der Flughunde. Monatsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1868 [for 1867]: 870 [865–872] .
Valid name: Micropteropus pusillus ( Peters, 1868)
Type species of Micropteropus Matschie, 1899 .
Holotype: ZMB 3438 View Materials , body and skull (extracted) in alcohol, female, immature; “Yoruba”[land] = Country of the Yoruba, SE-Nigeria; collected by A. Mann, 1862, donated by F. von Krauss ( SMNS).
Comment: A former type designation by Peters (1868: 870) was refuted by Andersen (1912: 558). However, his rejection, which was based merely on technical grounds, is unjustified as shown by Bergmans (1989: 99), and confirmed by Kock et al. (2002: 82). A further specimen ZMB 3475 in the general catalogue is also marked with a type asterisk, presumably by Peters. However, ZMB 3475, which was collected in Lagos and acquired from Salmin, was not part of the original description, hence its marking as “ type ” is rather inexplicable.
