Forewings not powdered, faintly or lightly infuscated in basal half of clavus, along most parts of Cu1, and in apical quarter of wing; four small brown dots at the apices of Ms1a, Ms2, Ms3, and Ms4; a narrow, red mark around last subcostal sector; veins in apical quarter orange-red, colourless in rest of forewings. Male genitalia with pygofer narrow; anal segment with a pair of lateral extensions; genital styles broad and rounded, proximal dorsal process short, distal dorsal process elongated, both well separated. Aedeagus with apical part elongated, the right side bearing numerous fine spines and ending in a pointed process; on the left side, a blunt terminal process.
Etymology. The species name is a Latin adjective ( quadrimaculatus , -a, -um = with four spots).
Type material. Lectotype (here designated), sex unknown (forewing 5.6 mm), AUSTRALIA; labels: 1) Type 2) Rhotana / quadrimaculata/ type Dist. 3) Queensland / F.P. Dodd / 1902-319 ( BMNH).
Note. Distant described this species from an unspecified number of specimens from " Queensland (F.P. Dodd, Brit. Mus.)". One specimen in the BMNH with corresponding data and bearing a type label is here designated as lectotype. A second female specimen in BMNH also collected by F.P. Dodd but in a different year (see below) could possibly also have been part of the type series .
Other material examined. AUSTRALIA: Queensland, Kuranda, V.1904, 1 ♀ , F.P. Dodd ( BMNH) ; Queensland, Hutchinson Creek near Daintice R. 8.I.1967, 1 ♂ , D.K. McAlpine & G. Holloway, MV lamp ( AMS).
Distribution. Australia (Queensland).
Diagnosis. Rhotana quadrimaculata is characterized by the separated facial carinae and the four small brown marks on the forewings at the apices of the four median sectors.
