Rhotana melichari View in CoL species group

Diagnosis. The species of the Rhotana melichari species group can be recognized by the combination of the following characters:

1. Forewings very broad, 1.6 to 1.7 times longer than wide.

2. Forewings with apical part of Cu1 deflected, angle between this part and longitudinal axis of forewing and usually more than 60°.

3. Forewings with Ms1 fork usually close to apex of basal median cell.

4. Facial carinae separated at their base.

5. Male pygofer without lateral projections.

6. Male genital styles often widening towards the end and with the proximal dorsal process unusually broad; it also can have a needle-like process at the inner ventral margin.

7. Male anal segment can have 2 small ventral processes near its apex.

8. Rostrum long, labium surpasses hind coxae by about one third to one half of its length.

9. Hindwings colourless.

Distribution. Species of this group are found in New Guinea and New Ireland.
