In Chongxin County and Huating County (Gansu Province) the pest-like occurance of this species

affected over 20 kinds of trees in 1988. The most seriously defoliated species were predominantly Quercus

liaotungensis & Carpinus cordata (Fagaceae) . In 1988 the pests covered 2666.7 ha and destroyed an area of

2133.3 ha. The following events which occurred in a two year cycle have become increasingly serious. The

density was estimated at 1000 to 5000 insects per plant. Affected forests were totally defoliated and looked as

if they had been burned by a bush-fire ( Li, Bing et al., 2002).
