Hoploclerus biaculeatus Westwood, 1849: 61 ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Lemidia bicolor Schenkling, 1906: 301 syn. n. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ) Lemidia spinnipennis Lea, 1907: 355 syn. n. ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ).
Material examined. Hoploclerus biaculeatus Westwood: LECTOTYPE (here designated): Type No. 1677 ( OUM). Lemidia bicolor Schenkling : LECTOTYPE (here designated): N. Holl / Schenkling det. ( SDEI). Lemidia spinipennis Lea : LECTOTYPE (here designated): a specimen from Needham Forest, NSW ( ANIC). PARALECTOTYPE (here designated): a specimen from Whitton, NSW, labelled 'COTYPE' (1, SAMA).
Remarks. Within the genus Lemidia , only Lemidia biaculeata (Westwood) , L. bicolor Schenkling , L. spinnipennis Lea and L. trilineata Pic have elytral apices that bear a spinose projection. Lemidia bicolor and L. spinnipennis , with their darkly coloured vertex and bifasciate elytral maculation, are clearly identical whereas L. biaculeata , though similar in body form, has an entirely orange head and most of the elytral disc maculate. The synonymy of L. bicolor and L. spinnipennis with L. biaculeata is supported by the discovery that specimens of both forms have been collected together (collecting data: Miles, Queensland, 31.x.1991, T.A. Lambkin, at light—in JSBC). Differences in depth of elytral punctation suggest the probability that L. trilineata is distinct from L. biaculeata .
