Remarks. Orchymont (1932) described Helochares (Agraphydrus) orientalis based on several specimens from the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java, and one specimen („Vergleichsmaterial“) from Yunnan. The specimen from Yunnan could not be located in any of the collections listed above, the sex is not indicated, and genitalia were not described or figured. The study of the holotype and five paratypes revealed that two of Orchymont’s paratypes actually belong to a new species (which will be described in a separate part of the revision of Agraphydrus ). In his description Orchymont (1932) compares A. orientalis with the few species from the Indian Subcontinent and Africa known at his time. Since that time many specimens of A. orientalis were found, exclusively in Indonesia. Material recently collected from twenty localities in Indonesia was studied by the first author. Agrapyhdrus orientalis belongs to the group of species with almost entirely chagrinated clypeus and unicolored maxillary palpomere 4. These features are also present in the Chinese species A. arduus , A. connexus , A. gracilipalpis , A. igneus , A. reticuliceps , and A. schoenmanni . Externally, A. orientalis is most similar to A. connexus , distinctly differing by features of the aedeagus. The record of A. orientalis from Taiwan by Satô (1965; see also Gentili et al. 1995) was based on one single female that could not be examined by the authors of the present study. The fact that a reliable determination of A. orientalis and it’s separation from similar species, especially from A. connexus is only possible by features of the aedeagus leaves the occurrence of this species in China or Taiwan very unlikely. The species is therefore excluded from the fauna of China and Taiwan and will be described in a future contribution of the revision of Agraphydrus .
