A pronotum smaller than mesonotum, distinctive cruciform elevation present, fused fore wing anal veins 2 and 3, timbal organs and an abdominal resonating chamber generally present in males, tympana present in both sexes, genitalia ventrally shield male sternite VII, and pygofer basal lobes present distinguish species of Cicadidae from the Tettigarctidae Distant, 1905d ( Moulds 2005) .
