Type material. Holotype male, with associated larval and pupal exuviae, USA: Ohio, Geauga County, Fern Lake Bog, 2.viii.1992, M.J. Bolton ( ZMBN Type no. 458) . Allotype: female with associated pupal and larval exuviae, as holotype except for 12.vii.1992 ( ZMBN) . Paratypes: 1 female, 1 larval and 1 pupal exuviae as holotype; 1 female, 1 larval and 1 pupal exuviae as holotype except for 12.vii.1992. USA: Ohio, Hocking County , 3 larvae, 29.viii.2001, M.J. Bolton ( MJB) .

Etymology. From Latin, macula , spot, referring to the antenna of male with apical dark brown spot.

Diagnostic characters. The adult male is characterized by the yellowish antenna with dark brown apical spot; anterior margin of cibarial pump strongly concave; superior volsella low and conspicuously projecting; inferior volsella large, digitiform, placed caudally of gonocoxite; and sternapodeme U-shaped. The adult female has AR 0.27–0.37; 10 transparent fused bead-like lateral lamellae on coxosternapodeme, and very short notum. The pupa has no taeniate L-setae and shagreen on tergite I–II, only tergites IV–VI with 4–6 thick hooklets, and 26–29 taeniae in fringe of anal lobe. The larvae are separable by mentum with three median teeth, the lateral tooth adjacent to median tooth not small, all antennal segments of the same color, and head capsule weakly sculptured.

Male (n = 1)

Total length 1.02 mm. Wing length 0.65 mm. Total length/wing length 1.56. Wing length/profemur length 3.0.

Coloration. Head and thorax brown, antenna yellowish with dark brown apical spot, legs yellowish, abdomen light brown.

Head. Antenna ( Fig. 18 B) with 10 flagellomeres, ultimate flagellomere 132 µm, AR 0.55; antenna slightly expanded apically, with about 17 apical sensilla chaetica, longest antennal seta 202 µm. Temporals absent. Tentorium, stipes and cibarial pump as in Fig. 18 C; tentorium 112 µm long, 12 µm wide; stipes 58 µm long, 3 µm wide. Anterior margin of cibarial pump strongly concave. Clypeus with 6 setae. Lengths of palpomeres (in µm): 10, 12, 17, 22, 46. Palpomere 5/3 ratio 2.7.

Thorax. Dorsocentrals 5, prealars 2. Scutellum with 2 setae. Anapleural suture 91 µm long.

Wing ( Fig. 18 A). VR 3.3. Cu/wing length 0.60, C length 160 µm long, C length/wing length 0.25, Cu 392 µm long, wing width/wing length 0.38. Costa with 5 setae.

Legs. Fore trochanter with dorsal keel. Spurs of fore tibia 18 and 8 µm long, of mid tibia 12 and 10 µm long, of hind tibia 33 and 11µm long. Width at apex of fore tibia 17 µm, of mid tibia 14 µm, of hind tibia (a) 30 µm. Width of hind tibia 1 / 3 from apex (d) 14 µm, elongation length (b) 30 µm, length of maximum thickening (c 1) 62 µm, total length of thickening (c 2) 110 µm; a/d 2.1; b/d 2.1; c 1 /d 4.4; c 2 /d 7.9. Hind tibia ( Fig. 18 D) expanded, with comb of 16 setae, one seta near spur S-shaped. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 17.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 18 E–F). The posterior margin of tergite IX medially concave, with 4 long setae. Laterosternites IX with 1 long seta. Superior volsella low and conspicuously projecting. Inferior volsella small, placed caudally. Phallapodeme curved, 41 µm long, placed in caudal position of sternapodeme. Transverse sternapodeme very thick longitudinally, 21 µm wide. Large attachment point of lateral sternapodeme with phallapodeme placed and directed caudally. Gonostylus strongly curved, 17 µm long, megaseta 6 µm long. HR 3.6, HV 6.0.
