Sogana extrema Melichar View in CoL
Sogana extrema Melichar, 1914:115 View in CoL , fig. 28; Distant, 1916:54, fig. 38; Metcalf, 1954: 131; Wilson & Malenovsky, 2007: 141. Holotype Ψ, Burma (Tenasserim) (deposited in the Moravian Museum, Brno) [not examined]. Logana [sic] extrema Uhl. [sic]; Lallemand, 1942:70.
Diagnosis. Length: Ψ, body 9.0 mm.
General color yellowish brown, vertex with three black spots at apex with the median one longish; frons with each lateral half with 5 carmine transverse bands. Postfemora with long blackish stripes.
Vertex with anterior margin projected, nearly straight in dorsal view; lateral areas distinctly depressed; median carina percurrent, joining together with sublateral carinae anteriorly. Frons with median carina thin and narrow. Fore wings with 16 apical cells and 7 subapical cells, the two middle anteapical cells equally long, Cu1 bifurcated at caudad of middle of clavus. (After Melichar, 1914: 115; Fig. 28 View FIGURES 24 – 35 ).
Male unknown.
Distribution. Burma (Tenasserim), southeastern China (Zhejiang [Chekiang]) (?), northern Vietnam (Hoa Binh) (?).
Remarks. Melichar (1914) described S. extrema based on one single female specimen from Tenasserim, Burma. We were not able to see any specimens of this species. This species can be distinguished from other species in the genus by the vertex with three black spots at apex with the median one longish, and the fore wings with the two middle anteapical cells equally long and with 16 apical cells and 7 subapical cells (see Melichar, 1914).
It is necessary to make a note on the distribution of S. extrema . In Metcalf’s (1954) catalogue of world Tropiduchidae, Chekiang [Zhejiang], China is listed as one distribution record of this species. However, this record, judged from Lallemand’s (1942) paper by Metcalf (1954), is questionable. Lallemand (1942) received some materials, sent by R. P. De Cooman, collected in Hoa Binh (northern Vietnam) and just after, specimens, sent by R. P. Piel, some collected in Hoa Binh and others in the Mountains of T’ienmu-shan (prov. Chekiang, China). Lallemand (1942) just provided a list of the species he identified but he did not give any information on the specimens he examined and the distribution data of the species. It is not possible to determine if the specimens of S. extrema identified by Lallemand come from Hoa Binh in northern Vietnam or from Chekiang in southeastern China. A re-examination of the Lallemand’s (1942) specimens is needed. Lallemand’s (1942) identification of S. extrema Melichar also needs to be checked.
It is interesting to note that in Lallemand’s (1942) paper the identified species was wrongly spelled as Logana extrema UHL.
