Gynapteromyia furcata Jaschhof View in CoL sp. nov.
Fig. 6A–D View FIGURE 6 A – D
Diagnosis. Gynapteromyia furcata is one of several, mostly undescribed species of Gynapteromyia , whose flagellomeres (Fig. D) and palpi (Fig. C) have furcate translucent sensilla (↓). Male genitalic characters diagnostic of this species are as follows (Fig. A). The fairly narrow tegmen has slightly protruding corners that are directed ventrally (↓); the protrusions of the medial gonocoxal bridges are pointed and sparsely covered with ordinary setae and microtrichia (↓); and the compact gonostylus is markedly tapered towards the apex (↓) and equipped with a normal-sized tooth. Females of G. f u rc a t a are unknown.
Other male characters. Body length 1.3–1.4 mm. Head. Genal setae 2–3. Eye bridge without ommatidia dorsally. Scape with 3–4 setae. Fourth flagellomere (Fig. D) with neck and node equally long; node ovoid rather than cylindrical, 2 furcate sensilla with up to 8 tines, microtrichia dense basally, very sparse elsewhere. Palpus (Fig. C) single-segmented, setae sparse, translucent sensilla numerous, with 2–3 tines. Wing length / width 2.7.
Membrane fully setose. Vein btv setose. CuA fading out before wing margin. Legs with narrow scales in addition to setae. Genitalia (Fig. A). Gonocoxae: ventral emargination deep, slightly broadened medially; ventral bridge unsetose, with indistinct transverse suture; anterior processes of apodemes about as long as distance separating them. Gonostylus twice as long as wide. Parameral apodemes small.
Etymology. The species epithet, furcata , is a Latin adjective meaning forked, referring to the peculiar shape of the translucent sensilla in this species.
Type material. Holotype. Male (INB0004432359), Costa Rica, province San José, Moravia, Zurquí de Moravia, 1,600 m, old-growth cloud forest, 21 May 2013, CDC light trap (tower path), ZADBI Project (in MNCR). Paratypes. All from the type locality: male (INB0004435516), same data as the holotype but 22 May 2013; male (INB0004434818), 26 Apr.–3 May 2013, emergence trap over vegetation (creek 2); male (INB0004430260), 28 June–5 July 2013, Malaise trap (#1, tower path) (all in MNCR).
