Psidium Linnaeus (1753: 406) View in CoL is the fifth largest genus of Myrtaceae View in CoL in Brazil with 61 species ( Sobral et al. 2016). It is recognized from other genera of Myrtaceae View in CoL by the flowers, that are solitary or arranged in short axillary racemes, dichasia or botryoids, pentamerous with a morphologically variable calyx, ranging from cupuliform to distinctly 5- sepaled to closed and calyptrate, rarely appendiculate, and an ovary with 2–5 locules and few to many ovules per locule on a peltate to lamellate intrusive placenta, as well as few to many-seeded fruits, in which the seeds have a bony testa and a C-shaped to cochlear embryo with minute apical cotyledons ( Landrum & Kawasaki 1997, Sobral 2003, Lucas et al. 2011).
