Diagnosis. The forewing maculation of Xenolepis apicula sp. nov. is most similar to that of X. cultrata sp. nov.; the two share a distinct orange ground color with numerous dark blotches. The two species differ in their basal patch, which extends from the costa to the dorsum in X. apicula , but from Sc to the dorsum in X. cultrata . In X. apicula the ocelloid area has two roundish silvery marks, whereas in X. cultrata there are two roundish marks and a very small spot. The hindwing of X. apicula has a slightly curved outer margin from the apex to the anal angle, but in X. cultrata the angle is wide and shallowly concave beyond the angle to the anal angle. The male genitalia of X. apicula are distinguished from other species by a slenderer valva that is slightly curved and tapered to a pointed apex.

Description. Head ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1–6 ): Lower frons orangish white, upper frons light orange; vertex dark greyish brown mixed with some orangish white scales; antenna dark brown except light orange at base; labial palpus porrect, first segment short, white mixed with brown, second segment upcurved, slightly widened from base to apex, white to orangish white with a narrow dark brown strip dorsomedially, apical segment narrow and rather short, orangish white slightly darker to orange dorsoapically.

Thorax: Pronotal collar dark brown, iridescent in angled light; mesonotum dark brown with two orange marks anterolaterally, with a wide transverse orange band medially, wider laterally, posterior end with a small orange mark; tegulae dark brown with a large orange patch over basal 1/2 of length. Forewing subrectangular, wingspan 8.5–10.2 mm in males ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ) (n = 3); costal margin evenly curved; apex rounded; termen rather straight from R 5 to CuA 1, then oblique to tornus; ground color orange; costal strigulae well developed, orangish white, separated by small dark brown streaks; basal patch reticulated, dark brown, extending from wing base to near middle of wing length and from costa to dorsum, posterior margin extending irregularly and obliquely from basal 1/4 of costa to near posteromedial end of closed discal cell, then extending irregularly to near middle of dorsum; median patch broad, irregular, broken medially by ground color, extending from costa to dorsum, anterior margin sinuate, dark brown, extending from near middle of costa to middle of dorsum, posterior margin extending obliquely outward from beyond middle of costa to M 1, then downward to dorsum near tornus; tornus with a small and short blackish line from dorsum to between CuA 2 and 1A+2A; ocelloid area with two silvery roundish marks between M 2 to between CuA 2 and 1A+2A; terminal patch an oblique band, brown mixed with dark brown, extending from near costa at R 2 to termen between M 1 and CuA 1, ventromedially with a straight transverse narrow band extending downward to M 3, apical 1/2 of costa with oblique silvery striae; fringe scales orange with dark brown between M 2 and CuA 1; underside greyish with trace of orange white marks, apical 1/2 with whitish marks along costa, termen with a narrow whitish margin and whitish marks between R 5 and M 2. Hindwing ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–6 ) subtriangular, outer margin rather straight from apex to M 3, then shallowly concave to anal angle, dark brown, slightly paler to wing base and anal margin; fringe scales brown except whitish anal angle; anal margin sclerotized with a tuft of long whitish hair pencils ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 8–9 ); underside light brown slightly paler to base.

Abdomen ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11–13 ): Sternum VIII with a large weakly sclerotized plate, posterior margin deeply concaved medially, wide U-shaped, lateral margin curved, abruptly narrow to a very narrow line anteromedially extending to anterior margin, with dense scale sockets posteriorly except on posteromedial margin, posterolateral corners with a small subtriangular patch of very dense scale sockets. Male genitalia ( Figs. 15 View FIGURES 14–16 , 18 View FIGURES 17–19 , 21 View FIGURES 20–22 ) with tegumen moderately wide, with moderately dense scale sockets basolateral 1/2; uncus moderately large subtriangular, rounded apex, with dense scale sockets apical 1/2; socii rather small pendant, lobe 1/3 length of tegumen, with moderately dense setae; gnathos membranous, moderately wide, with a rather narrow, transverse, slightly sinuate sclerotized band medially; tuba analis with a moderately widened, sclerotized band projecting upward to near apex of tegumen, slightly widened to apically, apex rather truncate, rounded apicolaterally; vinculum moderately wide; juxta subrectangular; caulis short; anellus widely cup-shaped surrounding basal 1/2 of phallus; phallus short and curved, vesica without cornuti; valva rather narrow, elongate curved subtriangular; sacculus small 1/5 of valva length, medially of basal excavation with a group of moderately dense scale sockets, beyond with a group of sparse setae, cucullus very long, slender, slightly tapered, curved to pointed apex, densely covered with distinct spines, spines slightly smaller from base to apex, strongly bent and slightly widened to bifid apex, except apical area covered with dense setae, ventrobasal angle with a row of short pointed spines, continued with a group of dense, moderately long bristles anteriorly ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 20–22 ) (the latest character lost in holotype).

Distribution. Thailand (Nakhon Si Thammarat province).

Etymology. The specific epithet (apiculus = point) refers to pointed apex valva.
