Diagnosis. Colletes petropolitanus is similar to C. altimontanus sp. n., but can be readily distinguished from it by the characters listed in the diagnosis for the latter (see above). In an inattentive observation, C. petropolitanus could be confused with C. argentinus and C. rugicollis , however, the pilosity on metanotum is entirely white in C. petropolitanus (black in both C. argentinus and C. rugicollis ), the pilosity on ventral surface of mesepisternum is very dense in C. petropolitanus (much sparser in C. argentinus and C. rugicollis ), and the marginal zones of T1–T4 are covered by white tomentum in C. petropolitanus (glabrous in C. argentinus and C. rugicollis ). In addition, terga are minutely punctate in C. petropolitanus , whereas in both C. argentinus and C. rugicollis , terga, especially T1, are coarsely punctate.

♀/♂—Labrum black, impunctate, with longitudinal sulci; clypeus without mid-longitudinal depression; hypostomal carina ordinary; mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with very large, smooth impunctate area; ventral region of mesepisternum, near ventral end of episternal groove, normal, without swollen area surrounded by hairs; marginal zone of T1 flat.

♀—Malar area 0.35 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus coarsely rugose; F1 slightly longer than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, flat, not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum triangular, shorter than its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, dense, hiding the integument; fore coxa bearing a spine; inner spur of hind tibia pectinate; punctation on T1 inconspicuous.

♂—Malar area 0.5 times as long as interocellar distance; F1 slightly shorter than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, flat, not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum triangular, shorter than its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa without spine; inner spur of hind tibia serrate; punctation on T1 inconspicuous; S7 as illustrated in Figures 6 View FIGURE 6 G, 6H; genitalia as illustrated in Figures 7 View FIGURE 7 G, 7H.

Comments. The pilosity on mesoscutum of males is variable and black hairs may be present or not. The color of wing membrane of females also varies, and can be hyaline, light ferruginous, dark-brown or fuliginous.

Moure (1949) concluded that the little variation found among specimens of C. petropolitanus (see above) from different regions of Brazil (including the type locality, Petrópolis, in Rio de Janeiro state) and from Paraguay and Bolivia did not support the recognition of different taxa among them. Moreover, he synonymized, under C. petropolitanus , the species C. catulus Vachal, 1904 , C. inflatus Vachal, 1909 , and C. speculiventris Cockerell, 1917 , based on the study of their original descriptions. Later, he examined the holotype male of C. catulus and the lectotype male of C. speculiventris , confirming his previous decision ( Moure & Urban 2002). Since access to the syntypes of C. inflatus was not possible, neither for Moure (1949) and Moure & Urban (2002), nor for the present study, the status of this species remains questionable.
