Type material (not examined): Type material of S. minor is lost ( Kethley 1970).

Non-type material examined. Passer domesticus (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes : Passeridae ): 35 females, 6 males and 33 nymphs ( AMU –SYR.94B) (sec., cov.); POLAND, Zachodniopomorskie, Darlowko Wschodnie , 4 May 2000, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU. Same host species: 5 females, 6 nymphs and 1 larva ( AMU –SYR.94A) (sec.) ; SLOVAKIA, Kurov , 21 April 1959, coll. T. Weisz. Material deposited in the AMU. Same host species: 7 females, 1 male, 5 nymphs ( AMU –SYR.94F) ; KIRGHIZIA, Bishkek (42°53'00"N, 74°46'00''E), 20 May 1992, coll. Kravtsova. Material deposited in the AMU and ZISP. Same host species: 12 females and 3 nymphs ( AMU –SYR.94E) (cov.); BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, October 2007, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU. Same host species: 7 females, 1 nymph ( AMU –SYR.94D) (sec.); CROATIA, Split, October 2007, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU. Same host species: 23 females, 4 males, 11 nymphs and 2 larvae ( AMU – SYR94 C) (sec., cov., rec.); JORDAN, Al-Dhleil near Amman, 15 March 2003, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU. Passer hispaniolensis (Temminck) (Passeridae) : 18 females, 6 males, 10 nymphs, 1 larva ( AMU –SYR.185) (sec., ter.); JORDAN, Al-Dhleil near Amman, 18 March 2003, coll. M. Skoracki. Material deposited in the AMU, ZISP and ZSM. Passer montanus (Linnaeus) (Passeridae) : 1 female ( AVB 05–0715 033 ); RUSSIA, environs of Sankt Petersburg, Gumbaritsy village (60°41'00" N 32°57'00" E), 25 September 1981, coll. S.V. Mironov. Material deposited in the ZISP .

Hosts range and habitat. Oligoxenous species inhabiting quills of secondaries, tertials, coverts and rectrices of birds of the genus Passer : P. domesticus , P. montanus , and P. hispaniolensis .

Distribution. England, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Jordan, Russia, Kirghizia, and China.

Remarks. Although this species has been reported from several other hosts: Carduelis chloris (Linnaeus) (Fringillidae) from England, Turdus iliacus Linnaeus from Russia, T. philomelos Brehm (Turdidae) from Jordan and Sturnus vulgaris Linnaeus (Sturnidae) from France ( Bochkov & Mironov 1998; Glowska et al. 2007; Nattress & Skoracki 2007), examination of the original material show that mites from these bird hosts previously referred to S. minor belong actually to different species. Mites from C. chloris belong to S. klimovi Skoracki and Bochkov 2010 , from T. iliacus S. parapresentalis sp. nov., from T. philomelos S. philomelosus sp. nov., and from S. vulgaris S. presentalis Chirov and Kravtsova, 1995 .
