Type species: Charadriphilus lyudmilae Bochkov and Chystiakov, 2001 by original designation.
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Small to medium sized mites (total body length 600–850). Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex without median protuberances. Two pairs of hypostomal lips present. Lateral hypostomal teeth absent. Peritremes M-shaped, with numerous clearly visible chambers in each branch. Movable cheliceral digit edentate. Stylophore constricted posteriorly. Idiosoma . Some of propodonotal setae covered by delicate ornament, other idiosomal setae smooth. Propodonotal shield entire, without pocket-like structures, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, se and c1. Six pairs of propodonotal setae present arranged 2–1–1–2. Hysteronotal shield present, fused or not to pygidial shield. Setae d1, d2, e2, f2 and h2 long, f1 and h1 short. Terminal setae f2 situated far from level of setae f1. Genital plate present or absent. Genital and pseudanal series with 2 pairs of setae. Aggenital series with 3 pairs of setae. Legs. Legs I-IV subequal in thickness. Apodemes I slightly divergent, not fused to apodemes II, both apodemes unequal in size and shape. Antaxial and paraxial members of claw pair subequal in size and shape, basal angles absent. Leg with full complement of setae.
MALE. Characteristics as in females except: total body length 500–635; all idosomal setae smooth; propodonotal shield entire or reduced to 2 small sclerites; propodonotal setae arranged 3–1–1–1; hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield; setae d2 short or long, setae h2 long, setae d1, e2, f2 short.
Host range. This genus is associated with birds of two orders: Charadriformes ( Scolopacidae ) and Ralliformes ( Rallidae ).
Habitat. Unknown.
Species included. The world fauna of this genus comprises 5 named species recorded from the Palaearctic (3 species) and Neotropic (2) regions ( Table 15). The Palaearctic fauna includes: Charadriphilus gallinago , C. lyudmilae and C. ralli .
